Union Continues To Lift Area Standards In The Southern California Sanitation Industry By Securing A Contract For Athens Services Workers For The First Time In The Company’s History
April 13, 2022
Teamsters Local 396 has reached an agreement with Athens Services on an assumption agreement covering workers previously employed by longtime Teamster employer, Calmet Services, which Athens Services recently purchased. This agreement ensures that Athens Services will abide by the current union contract that is in effect and that workers at the former Calmet facility will remain Teamsters with the protection and benefits of a strong Union contract. This marks the first-ever Union contract established between Teamsters Local 396 and Athens Services in the company’s history.
Additionally, Teamsters Local 396 has reached an agreement with Athens Services on a new labor peace agreement for workers that service the City of Los Angeles through its recyLA franchise program. This historic agreement will ensure that workers at Athens Services who service the City of Los Angeles can organize their Union without any intimidation from the company.
Secretary-Treasurer of Teamsters Local 396 Ron Herrera stated, “History has truly been made today with this agreement. For the first time ever, workers at Athens Services will now have the protections and benefits of a Union contract. This is a testament to the courage and commitment that Teamsters Local 396 has had over several decades to continue organizing in the sanitation industry and lift standards for thousands of essential workers of color. I am confident that this major victory will continue to build up momentum, encouraging thousands of other sanitation workers in the region to organize and join the Teamsters.”
Teamsters Local 396 currently represents over 3,000 sanitation workers throughout Southern California and is the largest Teamster Sanitation Local in the U.S. Our sanitation members serve communities throughout Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, and San Bernardino Counties.
